WHAT IS GOOGLE SLIDES?

Google Slides is a free, cloud-based presentation application that allows you to create, edit, and share presentations online. It's part of Google Workspace and works seamlessly across all your devices.

GETTING STARTED

ACCESS GOOGLE SLIDES:

  1. Visit slides.google.com
  2. OR click the Google Apps icon (9 dots) in Gmail → Slides
  3. Sign in with your Google account

CREATE A NEW PRESENTATION:

  • → Click the colorful "+" icon (Blank presentation)
  • → OR choose from a template (photo album, portfolio, pitch deck, etc.)
  • → Your presentation starts with "Untitled presentation" - click to rename

MAKE A COPY OF A PRESENTATION:

  1. Open the presentation you want to copy
  2. Click "File" → "Make a copy"
  3. Rename the copy
  4. Choose where to save it (optional)
  5. Click "Make a copy"

Perfect for using templates or working from a shared presentation!

WORKING WITH SLIDES

ADD NEW SLIDES:

  • → Click the "+" icon in the toolbar (or Ctrl/⌘+M)
  • → OR click "Slide" → "New slide"
  • → The new slide appears after your current slide

DUPLICATE A SLIDE:

  1. Right-click the slide thumbnail in the left panel
  2. Click "Duplicate slide"
  3. The duplicate appears immediately after the original

Great for maintaining consistent layouts!

DELETE A SLIDE:

  1. Right-click the slide thumbnail
  2. Click "Delete slide"
  3. OR select the slide and press Delete key

MOVE SLIDES:

  • → Click and drag slide thumbnails in the left panel
  • → Drop them in the desired position
  • → A blue line shows where the slide will be placed

COPY SLIDES FROM OTHER PRESENTATIONS:

  1. Open the source presentation
  2. Select the slides you want to copy (Ctrl/⌘+click for multiple)
  3. Copy them (Ctrl/⌘+C)
  4. Go to your target presentation
  5. Paste (Ctrl/⌘+V)
  6. Choose to link to original or copy theme

THEMES & LAYOUTS

APPLY A THEME:

A theme applies pre-designed colors, fonts, and layouts to all slides:

  1. Click "Slide" → "Change theme"
  2. Browse available themes in the sidebar
  3. Click a theme to apply it to all slides
  4. Themes help maintain consistent appearance throughout your presentation

CHOOSE A LAYOUT:

Layouts provide pre-formatted slide structures:

  1. Select a slide
  2. Click "Slide" → "Apply layout"
  3. Choose from options like:
  • Title slide: For opening slides
  • Section header: To divide presentation sections
  • Title and body: Standard content layout
  • Title and two columns: Compare information
  • Title only: Maximum flexibility
  • Blank: Complete creative control

CUSTOMIZE BACKGROUND:

  1. Click "Slide" → "Change background"
  2. Choose a color or upload an image
  3. Click "Done" to apply to current slide
  4. OR click "Add to theme" to apply to all slides

SLIDE NUMBERS & SPEAKER NOTES

ADD SLIDE NUMBERS:

  1. Click "Insert" → "Slide numbers"
  2. Check "On" to display slide numbers
  3. Choose whether to skip title slide
  4. Click "Apply"

ADD SPEAKER NOTES:

Speaker notes help you remember key points during presentations:

  1. Look for "Click to add speaker notes" below the slide
  2. Click in that area and type your notes
  3. Notes are visible to you but not your audience
  4. Access notes during presentation in Presenter View

Pro tip: Include talking points, timing cues, and reminders in your notes!

TEXT & FORMATTING

INSERT TEXT BOX:

  1. Click "Insert" → "Text box"
  2. Click and drag on the slide to create the text box
  3. Start typing your text
  4. Resize by dragging corner handles
  5. Move by dragging the text box border

FORMAT TEXT:

Select text, then use toolbar options:

  • Font: Change font style (Arial, Georgia, etc.)
  • Size: Adjust text size
  • Bold, Italic, Underline: Emphasize text
  • Color: Change text color
  • Highlight: Add background color to text
  • Alignment: Left, center, right, or justify
  • Lists: Create bulleted or numbered lists

ALIGN TEXT IN TEXT BOX:

  1. Select the text box
  2. Click "Format" → "Align & indent"
  3. Choose horizontal alignment (left, center, right, justified)
  4. Choose vertical alignment (top, middle, bottom)

TRANSITIONS & ANIMATIONS

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

  • Transitions: Visual effects between slides as you move through your presentation
  • Animations: Visual effects applied to individual elements on a single slide

ADD SLIDE TRANSITIONS:

  1. Select a slide
  2. Click "Slide" → "Transition"
  3. Choose a transition type from the sidebar:
    • • None (instant change)
    • • Dissolve (fade effect)
    • • Fade (gradual transition)
    • • Slide from right/left
    • • Flip, Cube, Gallery, etc.
  4. Adjust speed (slow, medium, fast)
  5. Click "Apply to all slides" to use the same transition throughout
  6. Click "Play" to preview the transition

ADD OBJECT ANIMATIONS:

  1. Select an element on your slide (text box, image, shape)
  2. Click "Insert" → "Animation"
  3. Choose animation type:
    • • Fade in/out
    • • Fly in from edge
    • • Zoom
    • • Spin
  4. Choose when animation starts:
    • On click: Manual control
    • After previous: Automatic sequence
    • With previous: Simultaneous animations
  5. Adjust speed (slow, medium, fast)
  6. Click "Play" to preview

Pro Tip: Use animations sparingly for professional presentations. Too many animations can be distracting!

PRESENTING YOUR SLIDES

START PRESENTATION MODE:

  • → Click "Present" button (top-right corner)
  • → OR click "View" → "Slideshow"
  • → OR press Ctrl/⌘+F5
  • → To present from current slide: Click "Present from current slide"

NAVIGATE DURING PRESENTATION:

  • Next slide: Click, press spacebar, or arrow right
  • Previous slide: Press arrow left
  • Go to specific slide: Type slide number + Enter
  • Exit presentation: Press Esc

PRESENTER VIEW:

See speaker notes and upcoming slides while presenting:

  1. Start presentation mode
  2. Click the three dots menu
  3. Select "Presenter view"
  4. You'll see:
    • • Current slide (large)
    • • Speaker notes
    • • Next slide preview
    • • Timer

PRESENTATION TOOLS:

During presentation, access tools by moving your mouse:

  • Laser pointer: Highlight areas of your slide
  • Pen: Draw on slides during presentation
  • Highlighter: Emphasize text or areas

COLLABORATION & SHARING

SHARE YOUR PRESENTATION:

  1. Click the blue "Share" button (top-right corner)
  2. Add email addresses of people you want to share with
  3. Choose permission level:
    • Viewer: Can only view (cannot edit or comment)
    • Commenter: Can view and add comments (cannot edit)
    • Editor: Full access to edit, comment, and share
  4. Add a message (optional)
  5. Click "Send"

SHARE VIA LINK:

  1. Click "Share"
  2. Click "Copy link"
  3. Change link access if needed:
    • Restricted: Only people you add can access
    • Anyone with the link: Anyone who has the link can access
  4. Paste link in email, message, or social media

COMMENTS:

  1. Click where you want to add a comment
  2. Click the comment icon (or Ctrl/⌘+Alt+M)
  3. Type your comment or question
  4. Click "Comment"
  5. Others can reply to create a conversation thread
  6. Resolve comments when addressed by clicking "Resolve"

Real-Time Collaboration: See others' cursors and edits live! Multiple people can work simultaneously.

DOWNLOADING & FILE FORMATS

DOWNLOAD YOUR PRESENTATION:

  1. Click "File" → "Download"
  2. Choose format:

FILE FORMATS:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx): Open in PowerPoint, compatible with most systemsBest for: Sharing with PowerPoint users, editing offline
  • PDF Document (.pdf): Preserves formatting, cannot be editedBest for: Final versions, printing, sharing read-only content
  • Plain Text (.txt): Text content only, no formattingBest for: Extracting speaker notes and text
  • JPEG/PNG images: Each slide as an image fileBest for: Social media, embedding in documents

Remember: Your original Google Slides presentation stays in Drive - downloading creates a separate copy

TROUBLESHOOTING

COMMON PROBLEMS:

"My changes aren't saving"

  • • Check your internet connection
  • • Look for "All changes saved in Drive" at top
  • • If it says "Trying to connect" - wait or refresh
  • • Make sure you're signed into your Google account

"I can't edit a shared presentation"

  • • Check if you're in "Viewer" or "Commenter" mode
  • • Ask the owner to change your permission to "Editor"
  • • Make sure you're signed into the correct Google account

"My presentation looks different on another device"

  • • Some fonts may not be available on all devices
  • • Stick to common fonts (Arial, Georgia, etc.) for consistency
  • • Check how it looks on the device you'll present on

"Animations don't work in downloaded PowerPoint"

  • • Some Google Slides animations don't translate to PowerPoint
  • • Test the exported file before presenting
  • • Consider presenting directly from Google Slides
